April marks the 54th anniversary of Earth Day, a global celebration that serves as an important reminder of our responsibility to protect the environment. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, after a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California sparked outrage and action around the environmental degradation happening across the United States.
What started as a grassroots movement to raise awareness about air and water pollution has since blossomed into an international day of action. Earth Day is now commemorated in more than 190 countries, with millions of people participating in cleanup efforts, educational events, political activism, and other initiatives aimed at championing a healthier planet.
